What’s Behind The Hollywood Dream

Hollywood’s Struggle to Remain the Heart of the Film Industry

Hollywood is fighting to stay at the center of the global film industry. None of the 10 movies nominated for Best Picture were filmed in Los Angeles, even though the city has been home to major film companies for over 100 years. For example, “Wicked,” a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz,” was filmed in Britain.

For years, movie and TV productions have moved to other locations that offer tax incentives, making filming cheaper. Many crew members in Los Angeles were hoping for more work after the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes, but production has been slow to return.

The wildfires in Los Angeles in January made things worse, as some filmmakers are now considering filming elsewhere. Many workers, such as camera operators and costume designers, may leave the city instead of rebuilding. Producer Samantha Quan, whose Oscar-nominated movie “Anora” was filmed in Brooklyn and Las Vegas, said the situation is a wake-up call to bring production back to LA.

To help, supporters have started a “Stay in LA” campaign. They want the government to increase tax incentives for filming in Los Angeles over the next three years as part of the wildfire recovery. They also urge studios to increase local production by at least 10%.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has suggested raising the state’s film and TV tax credits from $330 million to $750 million per year. Filmmaker Sarah Adina Smith, who is helping lead the “Stay in LA” campaign, supports the increase but believes the state should do even more, such as making the permit process easier.
