Municipal And Mukhtar Elections Cycle 2

Lebanon successfully wrapped up the second phase of its municipal and mukhtar elections on Sunday, covering the North Governorate and Akkar. The Ministry of Interior reported that by 7 p.m., a total of 512 complaints had been registered, most of which were administrative in nature. Akkar accounted for the majority of these complaints, with a few cases tied to security incidents.

Voter Turnout and Regional Variations

As of 7 p.m., real-time data from the Ministry showed voter turnout at 35.01% in the North and 46.21% in Akkar. Roumieh initially had the highest turnout, though by day’s end, regions in the NIA had taken the lead. Tripoli registered the lowest turnout consistently throughout the day

Minister Al-Hajjar: Elections Proceeding Calmly and in Order

During an inspection tour in Tripoli, Interior and Municipalities Minister Ahmad Al-Hajjar affirmed that the elections were progressing in an “orderly and calm manner.” Accompanied by North Governor Judge Ramzi Nohra and top security officials, Al-Hajjar praised the effective coordination between agencies and commended the public’s disciplined participation.

He emphasized that violations were being addressed on the spot and that security forces were “doing their duty and will intervene when necessary.” Al-Hajjar urged citizens of Tripoli, Danniyeh, and Akkar to vote responsibly, reiterating that breaches of public order would not be tolerated.

Organizational Challenges Handled Swiftly

Al-Hajjar assured voters that electricity would be stable during the ballot counting. The Minister also responded to issues raised about delegate permits and accessibility for persons with disabilities, promising to follow up on all complaints.

Security Incidents and Arrests

While the process was largely peaceful, security breaches were not absent. In Tel Hamira (Akkar), State Security detained a Syrian national attempting to vote using a forged Lebanese ID, allegedly in support of a mukhtar candidate. Both the individual and his sponsor were sent for investigation. Elsewhere, in Mishmish (Akkar), the Lebanese Army arrested a man identified as A.Q. after he stole an election ballot box.

Tragedy struck in Akkar when a person died due to stray celebratory gunfire following the election results. In response, Minister Al-Hajjar urged citizens to avoid celebratory shooting, warning that offenders would face arrest and prosecution.

Political Victories

Marada Movement and allies triumphed in Zgharta (21–0) and Bnachii (9–0).

  • The Marada list also won in Zgharta–Ehden Municipality.
  • In Eddeh, Batroun, the Free Patriotic Movement–backed list won entirely.
  • Tannourine saw a full victory for a list supported by the Lebanese Forces, Majd Harb, and the Kataeb Party.

According To NNA

Now, all eyes turn to the final electoral round, set to take place in Beirut next Sunday, May 18. As the capital prepares for its turn at the polls, expectations are high for another decisive day that could shape the local political landscape. Authorities are urging continued calm, transparency, and active participation to close this municipal and mukhtar election cycle on a high note.
