Farewell to Ziad Rahbani: A Rebel Genius

Who is Ziad Rahbani?

Ziad Rahbani was not just a musician, playwright, or composer, he was a cultural storm that reshaped the Arab artistic landscape. Born in 1956 to the legendary singer Fairouz and composer Assi Rahbani, Ziad grew up in a home filled with melodies, poetry, and political nuance. But instead of walking in his parents’ shadow, he carved a bold path of his own.
Ziad became the voice of the angry, the disillusioned, the working class. Through biting satire, daring theatrical performances, and haunting melodies, he gave the Lebanese people and the entire Arab world permission to laugh, to cry, and to think. His art was a reflection of reality, raw and unapologetic. For those unfamiliar with him: Ziad was the kind of artist who didn’t just create art, he challenged power, rewrote language, and turned contradictions into culture.

A Voice of Resistance and Innovation

Ziad’s work was never just entertainment. His plays and songs confronted political realities with irony and courage, giving voice to the marginalized and questioning authority. Through his art, he highlighted social contradictions and the struggles of everyday life, turning personal stories into universal experiences. His style was revolutionary mixing jazz with Arabic melodies, and comedy with tragedy offering a fresh, fearless approach to Arab culture.

The Legacy He Leaves Behind

With his passing, Lebanon and the Arab world have lost one of their boldest artistic voices. Ziad Rahbani’s legacy is one of courage, creativity, and uncompromising truth. His influence remains in theaters, radios, and hearts across the region. He showed that art could be a form of resistance and a catalyst for change. Though he is gone, his work continues to inspire new generations to question, to dream, and to create.

As we bid farewell to Ziad, we remember a man who refused to follow the rules and instead wrote his own. His music, theatre, and words remain a testament to the power of art to challenge and transform society. Ziad’s spirit lives on in every note and every line of his plays, reminding us that true genius is fearless.
His body was transferred from Khoury Hospital in Beirut to his final resting place in the town of Bikfaya, marking the end of an era but the beginning of an everlasting legacy.
