South Korea Battles Its Worst Wildfire Disaster

South Korea is fighting massive wildfires that have doubled in size within a day, making them the worst natural fire disaster in the country’s history. At least 26 people have died, and hundreds of buildings have been destroyed in North Gyeongsang province. Officials say the fires highlight the growing impact of climate change, as dry weather and strong winds fuel the flames.

Biggest Fire in South Korea’s History

The largest fire, which started in Uiseong county, has burned over 36,000 hectares (88,960 acres), making it the biggest in the country’s history. About 37,000 people have been forced to evacuate, according to the Yonhap news agency Strong winds and dry conditions have made it difficult to fully control the fires. Flames have spread eastward toward the coast, and some mountain areas have been evacuated. Officials hope for rain, but the forecasted amount is too little to make a major difference.

Government and Military Response

Acting President Han Duck-soo said the country is facing a crisis due to the rapid spread of the fires. The military has provided aviation fuel to keep firefighting helicopters running, while over 9,000 people and 120 helicopters are working to control the fires.

The Growing Threat of Wildfires

Scientists warn that climate change will make wildfires more frequent and deadly worldwide. Higher temperatures and dry landscapes provide the perfect conditions for large fires to spread quickly. Experts say South Korea must prepare for more extreme fire seasons in the future.
