Pope Francis has passed away

A Humble Leader Remembered

The Vatican has announced the full details of Pope Francis’s funeral, following his passing at the age of 88. He died on Monday after suffering a stroke and heart failure. Earlier this year, the Pope had spent several weeks in the hospital due to double pneumonia.

Pope Francis’s funeral will take place on Saturday at 10 AM in St. Peter’s Square. The ceremony will be attended by world leaders from across the globe, showing the wide respect and love he had earned.

The Mass will be led by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the 91-year-old Dean of the College of Cardinals.

Leaders expected to attend include:

  • Donald Trump, former U.S. President, and his wife
  • Javier Milei, President of Argentina – Pope Francis’s home country
  • Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil
  • Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine
  • Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission

His Final Wish

In a surprising break from tradition, Pope Francis asked in his will to be buried in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome instead of St. Peter’s Basilica, where most previous popes were laid to rest.

Preparing for the Future

Following his death, ancient traditions were followed. The Pope’s “Fisherman’s Ring” and his official wax seal were destroyed to prevent them from being used again.

All cardinals in Rome have gathered to manage daily Church affairs until a new Pope is elected. The papal conclave the secret vote to choose a new pope will likely take place sometime after May 6, about 15 to 20 days after the funeral. Around 135 cardinals are eligible to vote.

Once a new pope is chosen, white smoke will rise from the Sistine Chapel—a sign to the world that a new spiritual leader has been elected.

A Legacy of Kindness

Pope Francis reminded us that being kind is just as important as being strong. He spoke about the importance of helping others and spreading peace, and it made me reflect on how we treat those around us. Being in the presence of someone so humble and wise was a blessing. He truly lives what he preaches compassion, humility, and hope. When he started speaking, his words were simple yet powerful. He talked about love, unity, and caring for one another, like he was speaking directly to each of us. The way he connected with people, smiled warmly, and showed genuine kindness was truly inspiring.
