
AI in Education and Faith: Opportunity or Threat?
On August 20, UNESCO, in collaboration with the tech firm Gloo, turned the spotlight on the growing presence of artificial intelligence in classrooms and even religious spaces. The call was clear: as schools and churches embrace automation, the world urgently needs stronger digital ethics, transparency, and guidance on how to use AI responsibly.
AI is reshaping the way we learn, interact, and even seek guidance. From filling out church forms to helping a student draft an essay, the technology holds exciting promises but it also raises tough questions about privacy, bias, and who controls knowledge in this new era.
The Risks: Why AI Could Harm Education
UNESCO warns that, without proper guidance, AI could deepen inequality and erode trust in the education system. One key concern is over-reliance. If students let AI do the thinking for them, they risk losing their own voice and weakening their critical skills. Educators also worry about academic integrity, since AI can generate essays or assignments that may not represent authentic learning.
Another challenge is bias. AI learns from data that reflects existing social and cultural prejudices. This means it can reinforce barriers for students who are already disadvantaged. That’s why UNESCO stresses inclusion and the need to teach every student not only how to use AI but how to use it ethically.
And then there is privacy. Some AI tools collect voice or activity data that may not be securely stored. Teachers and parents are calling for full transparency on how student information is gathered, used, and retained.
The Benefits: Why AI Could Improve Education
Despite these risks, AI also offers enormous potential when handled responsibly. It can make learning more personalized, giving students tailored feedback and helping them progress at their own pace. It also expands accessibility, opening new doors for students with disabilities or those in underserved regions.
For teachers, UNESCO has developed frameworks that help introduce AI tools in ways that foster equity and engagement. High schools are already experimenting with AI activities to encourage hands-on learning, while universities are adopting chatbots that answer course questions 24/7, easing stress and improving communication between staff and students.
Even more advanced are AI study assistants that track progress, suggest resources, and remind students of deadlines. These innovations are not meant to replace teachers but to support human learning and free up time for deeper instruction.
The real challenge lies in teaching students to balance technology with responsibility: to use AI without surrendering their privacy, creativity, or independent thinking.
Is AI Dangerous?
This is the question that echoes beyond classrooms. AI is not inherently good or bad, it’s a tool. What makes it dangerous is how it’s designed, who controls it, and how it’s used. In education, unchecked AI can undermine critical thinking, spread bias, and invade privacy. On a larger scale, it could deepen inequalities, enable surveillance, and concentrate power in the hands of a few.
At the same time, AI carries the potential to transform learning, democratize access to knowledge, and even help humanity solve complex problems. The danger is not in the existence of AI, but in our failure to set ethical limits and teach future generations how to use it wisely.
