China Launches World’s Largest Fully Electric Smart Container Ship

China has officially launched the world’s largest fully electric smart container ship into commercial service, marking a major milestone in the country’s efforts to accelerate the transition toward greener and more sustainable maritime transportation.

The vessel, named Ning Yuan Dian Kun, departed Ningbo-Zhoushan Port on its maiden commercial voyage to Jiaxing Port in Zhejiang Province. The shipping route, traditionally served by fossil fuel-powered vessels, is now entering a new era of zero-emission maritime transport.

Zero-Emission Technology

Developed by the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute, the 10,000-ton vessel is powered entirely by an advanced electric propulsion system, enabling carbon-free operations while delivering high levels of automation and operational efficiency.

The ship measures 127.8 meters in length, 21.6 meters in width, and has a design draft of 6.2 meters. It is capable of carrying up to 742 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containers.

Its propulsion system is supported by 10 containerized battery units with a combined energy storage capacity of 20,000 kilowatt-hours, alongside two permanent magnet synchronous motors rated at 875 kilowatts each.

According to project developers, the vessel is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 1,462 tons annually, while also eliminating air pollution and significantly reducing operational noise.

Smart Navigation and Fast Charging

Beyond its environmental credentials, the ship is equipped with a suite of intelligent technologies, including smart navigation systems, automatic collision avoidance, high-precision tracking, and integrated communication between the vessel, shore facilities, and cloud-based management platforms.

The vessel also features a dual charging system that combines high-voltage shore power with rapid battery-swapping technology, allowing for faster turnaround times and greater operational flexibility.

Engineers have further enhanced efficiency through an open-deck design that streamlines cargo handling, while its aerodynamic bow reduces wind resistance by an estimated 15% to 20%, improving overall energy performance.

Expanding China’s Green Shipping Fleet

The vessel’s name, “Kun,” is inspired by a legendary giant fish in Chinese mythology. Its sister ship, Ning Yuan Dian Peng, named after the mythical bird that transforms from the Kun, is expected to begin sea trials in May before entering service in June.

Once both vessels become operational, they will form the foundation of a large-scale green shipping network serving fixed coastal routes.

Commenting on the project, Chen Xiaofeng, Chairman of Ningbo Shipping Co., said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to supporting the maritime industry’s green transformation while contributing to China’s long-term carbon reduction objectives.
