Protest worldwide mark the one-year anniversary of Israel’s conflict in Gaza

Around the globe, tens of thousands have mobilized in significant urban centers, protesting against Israel’s operations in Gaza as the conflict enters its second year.

In New Delhi, approximately 150 demonstrators assembled peacefully on Monday to express solidarity with the Palestinians. Activist Bhavna Sharma emphasized the dire situation: “People are perishing daily without food and are facing severe starvation.” Holding a sign stating “Stop the massacre,” the 52-year-old Sharma criticized India’s military support for Israel, questioning the rationale behind the arms shipments.

In the West Bank city of Ramallah, hundreds waved Hamas flags and carried images of the late Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, voicing their resilience and unity under the motto “We will not lose faith in the revolution.” The crowds displayed an array of flags, including those of Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen, signifying broad regional support.

Meanwhile, in Jakarta, over a thousand pro-Palestinian advocates rallied outside the U.S. embassy on Sunday, urging America to cease its military aid to Israel.

In Cape Town, demonstrators marched to the parliament, denouncing Israel as a racist state and proclaiming solidarity with the Palestinians.

In Berlin, German authorities deployed tear gas to manage the crowd in Kreuzberg district, where thousands gathered at Kottbusser Tor square to mark the one-year anniversary of the conflict, which began on October 7. Protesters displayed banners demanding an end to arms support for Israel and calling for the liberation of Gaza, while also criticizing police actions at previous pro-Palestine rallies.

Police intervened to stop a protest near the intersection of Kottbusser Damm and Lenau Street, preventing demonstrators from reaching Hermannplatz. The standoff escalated into clashes, resulting in several arrests, including a disabled protester who was forcibly removed from their wheelchair and taken into police custody.

The conflict in Gaza was triggered by Hamas-led attacks on Israel, which resulted in 1,139 fatalities, predominantly civilians, based on an Al Jazeera compilation of Israeli data, with approximately 250 others taken hostage.

According to Palestinian health officials, over 41,900 people have been killed in Gaza due to Israel’s military actions. The ongoing conflict has displaced nearly all of the enclave’s 2.3 million residents, leading to widespread hunger and disease. This dire situation has prompted allegations of genocide against Israel by several nations at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
