Starlink Expands Its Reach to India 2025

Starlink to Set Up Control Centre in India

The Indian government has asked Elon Musk’s Starlink to build a control centre in the country. This will allow authorities to suspend or shut down satellite services in sensitive or troubled areas to maintain law and order. According to sources cited by TOI, this is part of Starlink’s satellite communications licence process, which is in its final stages. Starlink is also working with companies like Reliance Jio and Airtel to handle marketing and improve networks.

Why a Local Control Centre is Needed

A control centre in India is considered essential to handle emergencies that may require the suspension of satellite communication services. A government official explained to TOI that it would not be practical to rely on Starlink’s headquarters in the US for urgent issues. Starlink has assured the government it is reviewing the matter. Under India’s telecom laws, the government can take control of any telecom service or network temporarily during public emergencies, natural disasters, or safety concerns. These laws also cover internet shutdowns when needed.

Security Compliance and Call Interception

The Indian government has also outlined security requirements, asking Starlink to allow law enforcement to intercept calls when needed. As explained by sources to TOI, this is a standard requirement for all telecom operators in the country, including Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea.

How Call Routing Will Work

To meet security standards, satellite companies like Starlink have been asked to route calls through an Indian gateway. For example, if someone in India makes a satellite phone call to someone in France, the call will first go through Starlink’s Indian gateway before continuing to France through regular telecom infrastructure, such as undersea cables. This ensures that security checks can be performed. Starlink representatives are in talks with Indian officials to address these concerns.

Starlink Partnerships Viewed as Complementary

A Citi report states that Starlink’s partnerships with Jio and Bharti suggest satellite communication services will work alongside existing telecom services, rather than competing with them. This eases fears that satellite services might pose a threat to current telecom companies.

Impact on Indus Towers

The report further notes that concerns about Indus Towers, a major telecom infrastructure provider, might be exaggerated. Since satellite services are seen as complementary, there may be less reason for worry.
