US and Iran to Meet Again for Nuclear Talks
Iran and the United States will meet again next week for more nuclear talks. The discussions are seen as “constructive” and included the first direct contact between an Iranian official and a member of the Trump administration.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the next meeting will be on April 19 in Oman, and that they were “very close” to reaching a negotiation framework in the recent meeting. The latest talks were held in Muscat, Oman, at the home of Omani Foreign Minister Said Badr Al Busaidi. Inside the house, the US team led by Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, stayed in a reception room on one side, while the Iranian team was in a room on the other. The Omanis carried messages in English between both teams. At the end, the two delegations briefly met in the hallway for a few minutes.
Both Sides Call It a Positive Step
Iran’s news agency IRNA said the talks were held in a “respectful and constructive” environment. The White House also called them “positive” and said they were a step forward. Witkoff told Araghchi that President Trump wants to solve the issues between both nations through diplomacy, if possible.
Why Now? Iran’s Weakening Position
Iran’s power in the region has been reduced over the past 18 months.
- Israeli airstrikes have hit Iranian-backed groups
- Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was overthrown
- Iran has faced unusual attacks inside its own borders
These events have weakened Iran’s influence in the region.
What’s Next?
CNN analyst Barak Ravid called the meeting a “very successful first step.”
However, the next meeting will need to deal with real issues and there is pressure to reach a full deal within two months, based on Trump’s deadline.
