FIFA Reveals Referees for Mexico-South Africa World Cup Opener

Brazilian Officials Selected for Tournament’s Opening Match

FIFA has finalized the officiating team for the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, appointing Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio to oversee the tournament’s curtain-raiser between Mexico and South Africa.

Sampaio will lead an all-Brazilian refereeing crew for the Group A encounter, scheduled to take place at the iconic Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.

Experienced Officiating Team

Joining Sampaio on the sidelines will be fellow Brazilians Bruno Pires and Bruno Boschilia, who have been named assistant referees for the highly anticipated opening fixture.

The Brazilian official brings extensive international experience to the tournament. He previously officiated matches during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and was also part of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) team when the technology made its World Cup debut in Russia in 2018.

Record Number of Referees for Expanded Tournament

The 2026 edition of the World Cup, which will feature an expanded field of 48 national teams, will also see a record number of match officials.

FIFA has selected:

  • 52 referees
  • 88 assistant referees

for the tournament, marking the largest refereeing contingent in World Cup history.

Somali Official Reportedly Unable to Participate

In a notable development, reports indicate that Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Arten, who had been expected to become the first Somali official to referee a World Cup match, was unable to obtain entry into the United States.

The situation has drawn attention within football circles, although FIFA has not yet issued a detailed statement regarding the matter.

Match Appointments Announced Ahead of Kick-Off

FIFA traditionally reveals referee appointments two to three days before each match. The announcement of the officiating crew for the opening game reflects the organization’s preparations as the world’s biggest football tournament approaches.

With experienced officials and an expanded roster of referees, FIFA aims to ensure high officiating standards throughout what is expected to be the largest World Cup ever staged.
