Nejmeh Square Comes Back to Life

Beirut’s Heart Beats Once More … Even If Slowly

Photographer Nabil Ismail wrote:

After years of absence and the silence that loomed over the markets of downtown Beirut, specifically Nejmeh Square, the lights have returned, igniting hearts before streets.

Just two days ago, the President of the Republic inaugurated the square’s lighting, and on this first Sunday after the reopening, signs of life have begun to slowly reappear timidly yet beautifully in a place once vibrant with visitors and laughter.

It is the return of spirit, even in hesitant steps, to the heart of the capital. A return of hope that Beirut, no matter how exhausted, never truly dies.

The Table That Never Left Him: Rafik Hariri’s Quiet Corner in Nejmeh Square

In a quiet corner of the café at Nejmeh Square stands a simple wooden table yet it is far from ordinary.

It is the very table where the late Prime Minister Rafic Hariri used to sit, sip his coffee, watch the people, and breathe in Beirut as he loved it: a city of life, not death.

It is more than just a table, it is a wooden memory, engraved with the love of a man who believed Beirut was always worth living for.

Today, as the lights return to Nejmeh Square and footsteps begin to echo once again through its streets, Beirut whispers a quiet promise to those who still believe in her. Between the glow of new beginnings and the memories etched in a wooden table, the city reminds us that even in silence, she remembers and that with every flicker of light and every sip of coffee, life slowly but surely returns.
