Aoun to French Senate Delegation: Only the State Controls Border Security

Full Army Deployment Needed at Borders

President Aoun told a visiting delegation from the French Senate that border security is the sole responsibility of the Lebanese state.
He stressed that an Israeli withdrawal from the five hills area is crucial, as it would allow the Lebanese Army to fully deploy along the border and take complete control.

“Only the state must be responsible for securing our borders,” Aoun said firmly.

Army Efforts Against Terrorism and Smuggling

Aoun praised the Lebanese Army’s efforts, noting that it is already deployed along the northeastern borders where it is fulfilling its duties fully. He highlighted that the army is not only guarding the borders but is also fighting terrorism, preventing smuggling operations, and maintaining internal stability across the country. The President confirmed that Lebanon remains committed to limiting the possession of weapons to state institutions only, stating,

The decision has been made. We cannot allow Lebanon to return to the language of war.”

On the internal front, Aoun assured that necessary reforms have already started and will continue, emphasizing that these reforms are needed by Lebanon itself not just to meet external demands.
He made clear that combating corruption is a priority, aiming to better serve citizens and strengthen public institutions.

Lebanon and Syria

Regarding regional issues, Aoun announced that Lebanon and Syria will establish joint committees to address outstanding matters. These include the demarcation of land and maritime borders and tackling the economic impact of the Syrian refugee presence in Lebanon.

Municipal Elections On Schedule

President Aoun also confirmed that Lebanon’s municipal elections will be held on time. He stressed that the state’s role is to guarantee the elections are conducted safely and fairly, while the Lebanese people alone have the final say in choosing their municipal and elective council representatives.
