Putin Announces Temporary Ceasefire

Ceasefire to Mark 80 Years Since End of World War II

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine. According to a statement from the Kremlin, the ceasefire will begin at midnight on May 8 and end at midnight on May 11.
The pause in fighting is described as a “humanitarian” move and comes as Russia prepares to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
Victory Day, celebrated every year on May 9, is one of Russia’s most important holidays, with millions of citizens taking part in ceremonies and parades. The Kremlin said that all Russian military operations will stop during this period. Russia also expressed hope that Ukraine would respect the ceasefire.
However, Moscow warned that if Ukraine violates the truce, Russia would respond appropriately.
Despite this announcement, Russia has continued to ignore Ukraine’s demand for a complete, unconditional ceasefire as a step toward broader peace talks.

Past Ceasefires Have Faced Violations

This is not the first time President Putin has announced a temporary ceasefire during the conflict.
Last year, Russia called for a similar truce during the Easter holiday. However, Ukrainian officials reported nearly 3,000 violations by Russian forces during that period.
Those past experiences have led many to question how effective or sincere these temporary ceasefires really are.

Skepticism and International Pressure

The new ceasefire announcement has raised fresh doubts about Russia’s intentions in the ongoing war.
It comes at a time when international pressure on Moscow is growing, with calls from the United Nations, the European Union, and major Western countries urging an end to the war.
The conflict has already caused hundreds of thousands of deaths and widespread destruction across Ukraine.

Ukrainian Response

Many Ukrainian politicians and analysts have criticized the ceasefire announcement.
They argue that Russia might use the pause to strengthen its military positions on the ground rather than truly seeking peace.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently said that Ukraine does not trust Russian promises.
He emphasized that any real ceasefire must come with concrete guarantees to stop the fighting not just a tactic for Russia to buy time.
