What is happening?
Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, says it will sue Apple. Musk claims Apple is favoring OpenAI’s ChatGPT app over his own AI chatbot Grok in the iPhone App Store. Grok, which is made by xAI, recently rose to #5 in Apple’s app charts, while ChatGPT has stayed at the top spot. Apple even has a deal to integrate ChatGPT into iPhones . Musk says this is unfair and breaks competition rules (antitrust law). In a post on X (Twitter), he accused Apple of making it “impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store,” calling that an “unequivocal antitrust violation”
Musk’s Comments on X
Musk publicly called out Apple’s App Store policies in strong language. He pointed out that his other app X (Musk’s social media app) is the “#1 news app in the world,” yet Apple still won’t feature X or Grok as a “Must Have” app. He wrote:
“Hey @Apple App Store, why do you refuse to put either X or Grok in your ‘Must Have’ section when X is the #1 news app in the world and Grok is #5 among all apps? Are you playing politics? What gives?”reuters.com.
Musk also said Apple had “put their whole body” on the scale in favor of OpenAI’s appimplying extreme bias. He summed up: “xAI will take immediate legal action”f Apple doesn’t change how it ranks AI apps.
Apple’s Response
So far, Apple has not made any public statement about Musk’s claims. News reports say Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment on this issue. In short, Apple has stayed quiet on Musk’s accusations, even though the company faces other antitrust scrutiny worldwide.
What It Could Mean for Developers and Users
If xAI’s lawsuit goes ahead, it could force changes that affect many app makers and iPhone users. Possible effects include:
- If Apple is forced to treat all apps equally, new and smaller apps (not just big names like ChatGPT) might get a better chance to be seen and downloaded. Developers could gain more freedom to promote their apps, maybe use outside payment links, and avoid high fees.
- If Apple has to open up its App Store, iPhone owners might see more app choices, including alternatives to Apple’s own selections. For example, Apple might have to allow third-party app stores or let apps tell users about cheaper deals online. This could lead to lower prices (since developers wouldn’t have to give Apple up to 30% of sales) and more innovation. In general, users could benefit from a less restrictive App Store that features a wider variety of apps.
- Musk’s lawsuit adds to a global trend of challenging “walled gardens” like Apple’s. Regulators in the EU and US are already pushing Apple to change . Whether or not xAI wins, the case could push Apple to explain how its App Store works and possibly make it fairer for both developers and users.
SO
Overall, the lawsuit claim from Musk’s xAI could have wide effects if it leads to court action or new rules. It could help developers by opening up the platform, and help users by giving them more apps and lower prices. But it remains to be seen how Apple will respond and whether the courts will take up the case.
