Ella Bus Crash: A Trip Ends in Devastation

Victims and Rescue Efforts Amid Harsh Terrain

Police confirmed that nearly 30 passengers were on board as the bus belonging to local municipal employees returning from a leisure trip collided with another vehicle before losing control and crashing through guardrails

Rescue operations commenced almost immediately. Despite the challenging, rugged terrain, soldiers, police, volunteers, and community members worked through the night to reach victims and transport the injured to nearby hospitals, including Badulla Teaching Hospital

Investigation Points to Speed and Loss of Control

An initial investigation suggests that the driver was traveling at high speed, leading to loss of control after colliding with a jeep and subsequently crashing through the guardrails . A survivor recounted how the conductor urged passengers to brace themselves just before the bus broke through the barriers and fell over the edge .

Deadliest Since May: A Grim Pattern in Same Region

This incident marks the deadliest bus accident on record in Sri Lanka since May 2025, when a bus plunged into a ravine in Garandi Ella near Kotmale, killing 21 or 22 people and injuring dozens more . Investigators found that fatigue and overcrowding played major roles in that earlier crash: the driver had been at the wheel for more than 13 hours and the bus was carrying well above its capacity .
