Lebanon’s Struggle for Joy Amid Economic Turmoil Finds Hope in Footbal

Lebanon, a nation grappling with severe economic challenges, turns to football as a source of hope and unity. Thousands of miles from home, the Lebanese national football team is striving to bring moments of happiness to its people through their journey in the Intercontinental Cup.

After a goalless draw against Mongolia, the atmosphere in the Kalinga Stadium shifted as the DJ resumed playing upbeat music and Indian fans began preparing for the next match between India and Vanuatu. In stark contrast, Lebanese midfielder Hassan Srour stood quietly in the stadium tunnel. With deliberate care, he folded a tissue, placed it where his forehead would touch the ground, and softly uttered, “Bismillah Hir Rahman Nir Rahim,” before bowing his head in prayer.

Though Lebanon hadn’t won, they hadn’t lost either. The draw kept their hopes alive for a spot in the Intercontinental Cup final, and for Srour, that was reason enough to be content.

This outcome, though not a victory, was a far cry from the heartbreak of their 1-1 draw with Iraq, which dashed their hopes of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2022. For now, the draw was a small triumph—a rare moment of joy in Lebanon’s ongoing struggle.
