Key Russian Diplomats Lead the Delegation

The delegation includes Mikhail Bogdanov, Russia’s deputy foreign minister responsible for Middle Eastern affairs, and Aleksandr Lavrentiev, the special presidential envoy to Syria. Their arrival was reported by the Russian state news agency TASS. These high-ranking diplomats are tasked with discussing Russia’s ongoing interests in Syria and the potential reshaping of its role in the country.

Syrian Rebels Aim to Maintain Relations with Russia

Although Syrian rebels overthrew Mr. al-Assad last month, their interim leader has expressed a desire to maintain Syria’s relationship with Moscow. Despite the historical conflict between rebel forces and Russia-backed government troops, Ahmed al-Shara, leader of the rebel coalition, called Russia “an important country.” In an interview with Saudi Arabia’s Al Arabiya, he indicated that he did not want Russia to exit Syria “in the way that some wish.”
