Beirut’s Heart Beats Again: Downtown Beirut Reawakens 2025

21/2/2025 The maintenance work has begun.

Informed sources confirm that 90% of businesses and shops in downtown Beirut are set to reopen. Business activity will gradually pick up in downtown Beirut, with around 100 new establishments — including retail stores, restaurants, and cafés — set to open. These venues will cater to a wide range of social classes, offering a range of prices to ensure success and sustainability, with a particular emphasis on attracting the Lebanese diaspora and Arab visitors. The once-abandoned streets of downtown Beirut are coming back to life.

Renewed Vitality

After three years of stagnation, the heart of the capital is finally coming back to life. Once engulfed in inactivity due to crises and security obstacles , this area is now shedding the weight of those difficult times. It’s returning, reflecting the beautiful Lebanon we’ve longed for. The streets are bustling again, filled with the sounds of laughter and the vibrant energy of people reclaiming their city. It’s a heartwarming sight, reminding us of the resilience and spirit of Lebanon.

Reopening of Nejmeh Square

After years of closure and stagnation, Nejmeh Square in downtown Beirut has finally reopened to the public, along with the surrounding roads, especially those near the Parliament building and Banks’ Street, adjacent to the Grand Serial. These areas had been sealed off with metal and concrete barriers, as well as barbed wire, since the October 17, 2019 uprising, which was marked by clashes between protesters and security forces guarding Parliament. This move follows a decision by Parliament Police to reopen the roads surrounding Nejmeh Square, ensuring clear access for all.

Return of Global Brands

Global brands are returning, and new international names are entering the Lebanese market for the first time, boosting commercial and tourism activity. This revival is expected to create jobs, increase trade, and attract tourists and expatriates, driving long-term growth in the Lebanese economy.

Will Beirut Souks Regain Their Vibrancy?

Khaled Nazha, Vice President of the Syndicate of Restaurants, Cafés, and Nightclubs Owners in Lebanon, shares his thoughts: “After Beirut’s leading restaurants, nightclubs, hotels, and shops faced massive closures amid a series of crises, a new light is emerging in the heart of the city with the reopening of Nejmeh Square. This marks the revival and renewal Lebanon so urgently needs. A spark of hope is rising in downtown Beirut, an area long celebrated for its diverse restaurants offering global cuisines, alongside its cafés and shops. It has always been a popular destination for both local residents and tourists.

Surge in Investments

Nazha predicts a surge in investments with dozens of new restaurants opening to cater to all budgets. He encourages Lebanese citizens to visit this revitalized spot of the capital, which reflects the Lebanon we aspire to. He adds, “The reopening of the roads leading to Nejmeh Square will breathe new life into Beirut’s tourism sector, having a positive ripple effect on Lebanon’s economy and all commercial sectors.”

One big reason is the election of the new president, Joseph Aoun, and the appointment of Nawaf Salam as prime minister. Their leadership has brought more stability and given people hope for the future. Many businesses feel more confident and have decided to return. The new government also has good relations with Western countries, which helps bring in more investments.

New Dawn for Beirut: The Significance of Its Revival

The resurgence of downtown Beirut is more than just the reopening of businesses—it symbolizes hope, stability, and a new beginning for the city. This revival means more jobs, enhanced tourism, and a boost to the local economy.

This is not the first time downtown Beirut has experienced such a transformation. After the civil war, the late Prime Minister Rafik Hariri played a pivotal role in revitalizing the area, turning it into a bustling hub of commerce and culture. His efforts laid the foundation for the vibrant downtown that many remember fondly.

Today’s revival is a continuation of that legacy, aiming not only to restore the area’s former glory but also to pave the way for long-term growth and a brighter future for Beirut. This renewal is about reclaiming the city’s spirit and ensuring that it thrives for generations to come.
