Russia and the United States have called for an urgent United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting. This comes after clashes in Syria‘s coastal areas between government forces and supporters of the ousted President Bashar al-Assad left 1,311 people dead, including over 800 civilians.
“Russia and the United States have asked for urgent closed-door talks at the UN Security Council to address violence against civilians in Western Syria. We expect the Danish presidency of the Council to schedule the meeting at 10:00 AM New York time (5:00 PM Moscow time) on March 10,” wrote Dmitry Polyansky, Russia’s Deputy UN Representative, on his Telegram channel.
“The United States supports Syria’s religious and ethnic minorities, such as Christians, Druze, Alawites, and Kurds,” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio posted on X. He also urged Syrian authorities to punish those responsible for the attacks on minority communities.
