Morgan Ortagus: Embodying Soft Power

Morgan Ortagus, serving as deputy special presidential envoy to the Middle East, epitomizes soft power, a fusion of poised elegance and strategic grit. Her visits to Lebanon transcend policy alone: she projects influence through her style, bold colors, heels, and a radiant smile, while delivering firm diplomatic messaging.

The Power of Presence

Most analyses focus on Ortagus’s policy positions /particularly her stance on Hezbollah/ but equally striking is her visual presentation. Dressed in vivid hues, confidently walking in heels, and smiling warmly, she commands attention and exudes approachability coupled with strength.

The Comeback: August 18, 2025

During a 2025 visit, she issued a clear directive: Hezbollah must remain disarmed and excluded from Lebanon’s government, calling it a “red line.” She even referred to Israel’s military setbacks to Hezbollah as contributing to their symbolic “defeat.” Her delivery was direct, yet controlled demonstrating soft power through resolute yet graceful expression.

Just yesterday August 18, 2025 Ortagus returned to Lebanon alongside U.S. envoy Tom Barrack. They met with Lebanese leaders and underlined U.S. backing for state authority over arms, supported the American diplomatic roadmap, and pushed for UNIFIL’s renewed mandate. Her return symbolizes a renewed soft-power push elegant, but firmly assertive.

Why the Trump Administration Chose Her

Ortagus was chosen for her rare combination of deep foreign policy and intelligence credentials, broad Republican establishment ties, and close connection to Trump’s inner circle, including Ivanka and Eric Trump. Her career spans USAID, the Treasury Department (as Deputy Attaché in Saudi Arabia), and the State Department as spokeswoman under Pompeo equipping her with both technical acumen and real-world experience.

Notably, her appointment navigated past previous criticism of Trump during the 2016 campaign. Trump himself acknowledged that she had initially opposed him, quipping that she had

“fought me for three years, but hopefully has learned her lesson.”
