No Plans for Direct Contact Between Putin and Trump
The Kremlin has confirmed that there are currently no plans for a phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump, signaling a pause in high-level direct engagement between the two leaders.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated on Tuesday that no call is scheduled at this stage, despite ongoing diplomatic contacts related to the conflict in Ukraine.
U.S. Envoys Continue Diplomatic Outreach
Peskov noted that U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner remain engaged in discussions with both Russia and Ukraine, maintaining communication channels despite the suspension of broader mediation efforts.
The two American representatives had previously participated in initiatives aimed at facilitating dialogue between Moscow and Kyiv. Those efforts reportedly slowed earlier this year following the outbreak of the U.S.- and Israeli-backed military campaign against Iran.
According to the Kremlin, communication continues through existing diplomatic channels, although no specific date has been set for a future visit by the U.S. envoys to Russia.
Zelensky Praises Recent Discussions
The comments come after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that he held what he described as a “positive” conversation with Witkoff and Kushner. Zelensky expressed optimism about their willingness to work toward a possible resolution to the conflict in the coming weeks.
Peskov, however, said Moscow had not received any official notification from Washington regarding the reported conversation.
Moscow Rejects Potential European Mediation Role
Addressing the possibility of European involvement in future mediation efforts, the Kremlin expressed strong reservations.
Peskov argued that any mediation initiative that begins by imposing conditions on Russia would be ineffective, adding that Moscow currently views European participation as unacceptable.
He further claimed that European governments appear more focused on sustaining military support and prolonging the conflict than on advancing peace negotiations, a position that continues to deepen divisions over the path toward a diplomatic settlement.
Diplomatic Uncertainty Continues
The latest remarks underscore the ongoing challenges facing international efforts to revive meaningful peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. While communication channels remain open, no breakthrough appears imminent, and key disagreements over the role of international mediators continue to complicate prospects for renewed negotiations.
