Top Russian lawmakers criticized a meeting of European leaders in London on Sunday, saying it did not produce a plan to end the war in Ukraine.
Konstantin Kosachev said on Telegram that Ukraine can only hope for better relations between Russia and the U.S. He dismissed the meeting as a “desperate attempt” by the UK and the U.S. to cover up a failed 10-year policy of turning Ukraine against Russia.
Kosachev, head of the foreign affairs committee in Russia’s upper parliament, said, “Europe has no plan.” He added that Ukraine’s only hope is progress in Russia-U.S. relations.
He also said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who hosted the meeting, must understand this.
Leonid Slutsky, another top Russian lawmaker, said the meeting would not help Zelensky, especially after his talks with U.S. President Donald Trump collapsed in Washington. Slutsky wrote on Telegram, “The London summit won’t save the leader of Ukraine’s Nazis. Zero results, a failed attempt to fix the clown’s reputation after his disaster in Washington.”
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now a top security official, criticized the London meeting even before it ended, calling it a “shameful show” on X.
After the meeting, Starmer said leaders agreed to create a peace plan for Ukraine to present to the U.S. He said the UK, Ukraine, France, and other countries would form a “coalition of the willing” to develop this plan.
Zelensky said he felt strong European support. He added that he could rebuild his relationship with Trump but that talks would need to continue in a different way.
