Central Bank Appointment

A month after securing a vote of confidence, Prime Minister Nawwaf Salam’s government appointed Karim Souaid as Governor of the Central Bank of Lebanon.

Souaid, backed by President Joseph Aoun, secured the position with the support of 17 ministers. However, during a conference following the appointment, Salam stated that Souaid was not his preferred candidate, citing “several reasons, given my commitment to protecting the rights of depositors.” Salam, along with six other ministers who opposed the appointment, emphasized that the new governor must adhere to the government’s policies regarding negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the restructuring of the banking sector.

Government Decisions

During the same session, the government approved a draft law amending banking secrecy regulations and decided to cancel this year’s Brevet certificate exams. Additionally, Jamal Hajjar was appointed as the permanent Public Prosecutor of the Court of Cassation, while Ayman Oueidat was assigned to the Judicial Inspection Department.

The Council of Ministers also mandated that the official appointment procedure for the management of Tele Liban be strictly followed, reinforcing the importance of transparency and adherence to proper governance protocols.
