Purple Carpet? Here’s Why

When Donald Trump landed in Saudi Arabia in 2025, he was greeted with a royal purple carpet. Ever wondered why? The reason goes deeper than just color…

1- Symbolism of the Color Purple in Saudi Arabia

Purple flowers, especially lavender and aromatic desert plants, bloom in Saudi Arabia’s mountains and deserts during spring. The color symbolizes the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the kingdom. In Arab tradition, purple also represents royalty, dignity, and honor, similar to how it’s viewed in Western cultures. Additionally ,the dyes for those vibrant colours were the most expensive, and therefore the most desirable way to express admiration for visiting dignitaries. Additionally Purple was originally extracted from a sea snail shell found off the coast of modern Lebanon.

2- . A Modern Diplomatic Statement

By choosing purple, Saudi Arabia signaled a move away from the standardized Western protocol (red carpets) to express national identity and cultural uniqueness. It was a way of saying: “We are proud of our heritage and can welcome global leaders on our own terms.”

3- First of its Kind Event

This was Trump’s first international visit as U.S. president. The Saudi government orchestrated a grand and highly curated welcome, including the purple carpet, to emphasize the importance of the partnership between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia.

4- Strategic Visual Impact for Global Media

Purple stands out dramatically in photos and videos compared to the traditional red carpet.
By using an unconventional color, Saudi Arabia ensured global headlines, media attention, and a memorable visual identity for the event , positioning the kingdom as modern, confident, and culturally distinct on the world stage.
